There is a moment that many women experience sometime in their 40s or 50s. They look back and ask themselves: Was that all? Did I miss my chance?

As a career coach, I often work with women from exactly this age group. I am constantly impressed by their lively personalities, their strong characters, their fascinating life stories, and the perspective they have developed over decades. I love listening to their stories and learning from their extraordinary knowledge and experience.

And yet, they often do not see the treasure they carry within themselves.

“What can I even do professionally anymore?” I hear them ask. “I never really built a career. I simply took the jobs that were possible at the time. My husband was the one who earned the real money. I moved from city to city, from country to country, and had to start over again and again. I focused on family and relationships. I missed my opportunities. Now it is too late to change something or achieve anything.”

No. It is not too late. You can still achieve much more than you think.

Don’t count the years – count the possibilities

If you are over 40, a large part of your life is already behind you. But instead of focusing on what is over, think about how much is still ahead of you.

The official retirement age in most developed countries today is between 65 and 67 and will most likely continue to rise. How many working years do you still have ahead of you? 15? 20? 25? Many years may still be waiting for you – perhaps even more than you have worked so far. And even the retirement age is just a number on paper. A whole part of your life is still there – together with opportunities you may never have had before.

Your education is probably already completed. Maybe you have finally settled in a place where you want to stay. Maybe your children are older or have left home.

Perhaps this is the first time in your life when you can truly focus on yourself and consciously shape your professional direction. Never before have you had so much self-knowledge, so much perspective gained through life, and so many opportunities to discover what truly fits you.

Competence and experience are not the same thing

Above all, you bring the experience of an entire lifetime – and the wisdom that comes from it. This experience is something very different from traditional competence. This kind of experience is something completely different from traditional competence.

Competence is a specific skill – for example, using software, managing a project, or negotiating a contract. You can name it, measure it, and put it on your CV.

And if something is missing here, there is no reason to worry. Learning has never been more accessible than it is today. Knowledge, entire courses, and countless training opportunities are often available directly from your phone, frequently even for free.

Life experience, however, is the ability to assess situations, anticipate consequences, understand people, and know when to trust your intuition and when to step back.

You cannot simply download that from an app. You learn it through time, experiences, challenges, successes, and mistakes.

That is exactly why many women eventually start feeling: “I actually have nothing to offer.” Not because they lack abilities. But because the most valuable things they bring often do not fit into a CV or a standard application form. Do you know this feeling?

The job market does not always recognize this difference. It often focuses mainly on skills that can easily be listed and measured. Especially the German job market can struggle with this: formal qualifications and perfectly continuous career paths often seem to matter more than what someone is actually capable of and what they truly bring.

But that does not mean you have nothing to offer to employers or to others. Everything begins with you recognizing what you truly bring with you.

Now is your moment

Whether you are looking for a better job, want to take the next step in your career, want to finally start your professional journey for the first time, return to work after years away, or build your own business – your possibilities have never been as diverse as they are today.

Never before have you had so many skills and so much life experience.

You have probably never known yourself as well as you do today. Maybe you still do not know exactly which direction you want to take next. But you probably know much better than before what matters to you, where your boundaries are, and what you no longer want.

At the same time, learning, networking, and new professional opportunities have never been as accessible as they are today.

Use all of this to finally build a professional life that you truly want – not the one that simply happened along the way, but the one that fits your abilities, your values, and what is important to you.

Your first step towards a fresh start

Before you think about your next job or a career change, first find out what you already bring with you. Many women underestimate their own experience because they have never consciously named it.

Take 20 minutes and answer these questions:

  • What can I do today that I could not do when I was 25?

  • What problems do people repeatedly come to me with because they know I can help solve them?

  • What do people thank me for again and again?

  • What am I proud of – even if it never appeared on my CV?

And when you have written this list, ask yourself one final question:

  • How would you like to look back on your professional life in five years? What would you like to be able to say about the path you started today?

You may discover while writing that you bring much more with you than you thought.

Not because you suddenly changed. But because, perhaps for the first time, you consciously recognize what has been growing inside you all these years. You may also realize how many possibilities are still ahead of you – and how exciting that thought feels.

Your age is not an obstacle. It is proof that you have collected experiences that others still need years to develop. Do not be afraid of this new chapter. Look forward to it – and start writing it, exactly the way you want it to be.
